How are movies financed today?

Today shooting a film is not easy. You have to find big companies to finance it.

If I'm not mistaken, the directors and writers sit down with the studio and come up with figures for approximently how much the movie will cost to make. The studio then sets up a budget and pays for the movie to be made, Then, they get the money back, via advertisement, box office, and DVD sales, etc. I believe that is how that works.
